Let’s get something out of the way: you don’t have to be “good at drawing” to be a great animator. In fact, some of the best animators in the world started off with stick figures.
Here are five tips to get you started—perfect for kids, students, or anyone just beginning:
Start with Shapes
Don’t overthink it. Every character starts as a circle, square, or triangle. It’s what you do with it that brings it to life.
Use Simple Tools
Apps like Flipaclip and Keynote are perfect for beginners. No fancy software or experience needed—just your imagination.

Tell the Story First
Focus on what’s happening, not how pretty it looks. Great animation is about movement + message.
Practice with Motion Loops
Try animating a bouncing ball or blinking eyes. These basics help you understand timing and flow.
Your Style is Your Superpower
There’s no “wrong” way to animate. Be bold. Be weird. Be you. Your story matters.
At ADS, our students go from “I can’t draw” to “Look what I made!” in just a few sessions. Because animation is about voice, not perfection.
